Rear-Projection Screen Scrim

The Rear-Projection Screen Scrim gives you a giant, frameless video surface that lives inside the scenic world instead of bolting a hard screen onto it. Made from tensioned poly stretch knit or a seamless projection gauze, it takes a projector’s image from behind and diffuses it evenly to the house, so you get bright, wide-angle big-screen video with no visible bezel, no seam, and no glossy hot spot burning out the middle of the picture. Because the surface is fabric, it reads as part of the set — a wall, a window, a portal — rather than an obvious AV screen dropped in front of one.

Rear projection is the reason productions choose this over a front screen: the projector hides backstage, so no beam crosses the performers, nobody throws a shadow walking downstage, and the picture stays clean even with talent right against the surface. We tune the fabric grade to your throw and brightness — a tighter weave for maximum image punch, a more open grade when you also want partial see-through. Order the sharkstooth-based grade and the same screen becomes a reveal fabric: solid with a projected image on it, then transparent to show a lit scene or performer behind it, the effect behind so many modern concert and theater ‘hologram-style’ moments.

Getting a projection scrim to sit drum-tight is all in the finishing, and that is what we build for. Edges come pocketed or fitted with grommets and tie lines so the screen tensions flat against a frame or between pipes with no wrinkles to distort the image, and seamless construction up to about thirty feet keeps a single unbroken picture across the whole surface. Everything is available in FR fabric certified to NFPA 701, because a projection scrim usually hangs in the thick of the lighting and rigging.
